There are many ways to help!
MAISI does a lot of programs for technical research and AI governance careers, but there are many other important career paths for AI safety! Mostly copying from 80,000 Hours:
Operations management to help impactful organizations grow and function as effectively as possible
Research management at an AI safety research organization
Working in information security to protect AI (or the results of key experiments) from misuse, theft, or tampering
Becoming an expert in AI hardware as a way of steering AI progress in safer directions
Forecasting research and implementation to predict future advances in AI and improve human judgment on decisions related to AI
Working in communication roles, e.g. journalism
Founding new initiatives aimed at reducing risks from advanced AI
Being a grantmaker to fund promising projects focused on reducing catastrophic AI risk
Helping to build communities of people working on this problem — joining the MAISI leadership team is a great way to start (:
Being an executive assistant to someone who’s doing really important work on safety and governance
Graphic design and video creation to make technical AI safety research easier to understand (e.g. animations for interpretability concepts)
And more, including neuroscience, philosophy, or simply donating money to organizations working on AI safety
See this post for a deeper analysis of different jobs that might help. There are ways all of these could go wrong and cause harm, so the first step is to learn and think more about the issue, while exchanging ideas with other people. Many of our programs aim to help with this step.
